Reducing Carbon in Concrete Learning Opportunities at Fall ACI Convention

Each ACI Convention brings innovative sessions from NEU: An ACI Center of Excellence for Carbon Neutral Concrete on tackling the challenges of reducing carbon emissions in cement and concrete. This year is no exception. Attendees will find multiple sessions to learn and discuss the latest materials, technologies, and developments. Place these presentations on your must-see list while at the Fall 2024 ACI Convention in Philadelphia, PA, USA from Nov. 3-6.

Getting It Right From The Start

Session date: Monday, Nov. 4., 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM

Designers are increasingly being charged with incorporating reduced-carbon concrete technologies into projects. For many, this presents a challenge to understand these new requirements while still achieving structural design goals and delivering a cost-effective design. The process of delivering reduced-carbon concrete from a design engineer’s perspective will be covered. This session will be moderated by Lawrence L. Sutter, FACI, Sutter Engineering LLC, and Donald Davies, Davies-Crooks Associates. Presentations by industry experts will include:

  • “Benchmarks and Thresholds – How to Use Each” by Dirk Kestner, Walter P Moore;

  • “Performance-Oriented Specifications” by ACI Honorary Member Anne Ellis, Ellis Global;

  • “Competitive Bidding with Double Bottom-Line Evaluations” by Davies; and

  • A case study “Recent Demonstrations Using Performance-Specified Cements in Flatwork” by Todd Nelson, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.

Building the Future with Nonmetallic Materials and Low-Carbon Concrete for Eco-Friendly Construction

Session date: Tuesday, Nov. 5, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

This full-day joint session is organized by NEU [KM1] and Nex: An ACI Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials. This comprehensive session will delve into the forefront of sustainable construction practices, emphasizing the pivotal role of nonmetallic materials and low-carbon concrete in shaping a greener future. It is designed to align with the missions and visions of both centers of excellence. Participants will explore innovative materials and techniques that reduce the environmental footprint of construction projects while enhancing durability and performance. Topics will include the development and application of nonmetallic materials, advancements in low-carbon concrete technology, and their contributions to eco-friendly construction practices.

The Fall 2024 ACI Convention occurs on Nov. 3-6, 2024, at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Philadelphia, PA, USA. View session information on the ACI website and register for the Convention.
